The hero and the other

In the first episode of The Hero & The Other, we explore the psychological imagination of India through the lens of 1947 independence, partition, colonial memory, and the people who shaped how India came to see itself. From Veera Pandya Kattabomman and the image of resistance to the psychological archetype of the “Brown Sahib,” the episode examines how different Indians could perceive different heroes and others within the same historical moment. We revisit the contrasting visions of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, B. R. Ambedkar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, while also looking at how Indian cinema became a powerful archive of collective imagination, shaping ideas of courage, authority, rebellion, belonging, and threat.
