Beginning with the annual TS Srinivasan Oration which has attracted the stalwarts in neurology to India each year (including a Nobel Laureate), a landmark in the Indian neuroscience calendar, progressing to an annual neuroscience conclave (from the year 2000), an academic institute in the Voluntary Health Services (2004), a model community neurorehabilitation facility VHS-CARES (Centre of Advanced Rehabilitation Services) in 2009 and now the TS Srinivasan-NIMHANS Chair in Clinical Neurosciences (established 2014, the first such privately funded academic chair in Indian Neurosciences), it has been quite a journey. One of the outstanding outcomes of this prodigious engagement has been the unique distinction of dual Honorary Membership (American Neurological Association & American Academy of Neurology) conferred on Prof. Krishnamoorthy Srinivas. The Approach books edited by Prof. ES Krishnamoorthy for Cambridge University Press and one journal supplement (Epilepsia, 2002) edited also by P Sathishchandra & L Sander. Prior to its being housed in NIMHANS the program has supported several PhD, M. Phil & Masters students in TN MGR Medical University & University of Madras.
Announced last year, now awaiting appointment of a Chair-Professor, the TS Srinivasan Chair in NIMHANS is unique in concept. It envisages continued and structured academic support that will enhance both science and patient care at India’s premier institution for the brain and minnd, NIMHANS. With an Advisory Board at its helm chaired by Professor TA Pedley of Columbia University, New York, the program envisages emoluments on the Professor scale together with dedicated academic support for the Chair-Professor, including two Post-Doctoral fellowships (one for their Chair and one in Neuro-critical care) & 5 PhD student research bursaries. It also envisages the conduct of the annual TS Srinivasan-NIMHANS Conclave in NIMHANS-Bengaluru and the TS Srinivasan Oration/Symposium in Chennai, each year. The program now includes a generous “TS Srinivasan Prize” for the chosen orator, awarded by the TS Srinivasan Charitable Trust.
