Rudyard Kipling famously said, “East is east and west is west, naaer the twain shall meet”. For decades neurologists and psychiatrists believed that the brain and mind were different entities and remained far removed from one another. In the latter half of the 20th century the electroencephalogram or EEG (a machine that could record brain waves), the development of drugs for psychiatric disorders and the introduction of electroconvulsive (shock) therapy brought the close relationship between the specialties into focus. Since then advances in technology, especially dynamic brain imaging have made Neuropsychiatry the queen of medical specialties, one of the fastest growing and most dynamic fields of medicine. Through this development we have understood the close relationship between the brain and mind; how neurological disorders have emotional and behavioral consequences & how psychiatric disorders have their origins in the brain. It is this rich interface of Neuropsychiatry that our work at the neuropsychiatry center has been focused on.
